What is Indie Hacking?
Indie Hacking is the practice of building and growing profitable online businesses – usually software, SaaS, tools, or digital products – independently (or with very small teams), often as a solo founder or “one-person business.”
Unlike traditional startups that raise large amounts of venture capital, indie hackers focus on:
- Rapid experimentation and building in public.
- Achieving profitability quickly (often within months).
- Maintaining full ownership and freedom (location independence, lifestyle design).
- Low or no external funding — bootstrapping with personal savings, early revenue, or side income.
Popular examples include Pieter Levels (Nomad List), levels.io, and many creators on platforms like Product Hunt, Twitter/X, and Indie Hackers.com. The movement gained massive traction after the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among digital nomads and tech professionals seeking more autonomy.
Key Principles of Indie Hacking:
- Build fast, ship often (MVP in days or weeks).
- Solve your own problems or problems in industries you know well.
- Leverage no-code/low-code tools + AI to move quickly.
- Grow through communities, content, and word-of-mouth rather than paid ads.
Why AI Agents?
AI Agents are the natural evolution of traditional software for indie hackers — and one of the biggest opportunities right now.
An AI Agent is an autonomous (or semi-autonomous) program powered by large language models (like GPT, Claude, Grok, etc.) that can:
- Understand goals.
- Reason step-by-step.
- Use tools (browse web, analyze data, send emails, generate content, etc.).
- Execute complex tasks with minimal human input.
Why Indie Hackers are Obsessed with AI Agents in 2025–2026:
- Massive Speed & Leverage One person can now build what used to require a full engineering team. You can prototype, test, and launch products in days instead of months.
- New Product Categories AI agents enable entirely new types of products: personal assistants, automated tutors, intelligent workflow tools, content creators, sales agents, etc.
- Perfect for EdTech Education is one of the best verticals for AI agents because:
- Every student learns differently (personalization at scale).
- Career guidance and orientation need smart, adaptive systems.
- Repetitive tasks (feedback, content adaptation, student support) can be automated while keeping human coaches for high-value interactions.
- Addressing misorientation and student well-being becomes more feasible with always-available, judgment-free AI companions.
- Strong Business Model Potential AI agents work extremely well with subscription models (SaaS), usage-based pricing, or B2B licensing — exactly what indie hackers love for recurring revenue.
- Democratization Tools are becoming accessible enough that non-traditional developers (trainers, marketers, teachers) can now build powerful products.
My Take as an EdTech new Indie Hacker
As a former in cool Edtechs and EdTech trainer turned digital nomad, I discovered Indie Hacking in 2024. My industry knowledge + the rise of AI agents created the perfect intersection.
I’m now running the “12 micro AI products in 12 months” (now eight in another artcile) experiment through MadShip Studio – building small, focused AI agents that solve real problems in education (orientation, personalized learning, student support, etc.).
This approach gives me freedom, fast learning, and the ability to create meaningful impact without waiting for corporate approval or big funding.
Let’s experiment and ship on the field.
Let’s continue to grow and blow !
Techie yours,
Angéline
